A guide to support young people with disability into After School Jobs

All students should be supported to achieve the educational outcomes they desire, including people with intellectual disabilities. We have put together a snapshot of the literature that exists on inclusive higher education. It provides an overview of the critical issues related to potential opportunities in Australia.

Evidence shows that young people with disability are able to thrive in open employment when prepared and supported while at school through a coordinated approach. A new evaluation report shows that Ticket to Work, an initiative of National Disability Services, is providing effective school-to-work transition supports for young people with disability.

‘Meaningful engagement’ is a new requirement to employment services. In the new government program ‘Inclusive Employment Australia’ which is set to replace Disability Employment Services (DES) in November this year, ‘meaningful engagement’ will be used to monitor whether a person with disability is participating in activities intended to help them gain employment.  We believe that further work and investigation is required to define and ensure genuine reciprocity between services and participants.  ​​​​​​
