Vocational Education and Training

Vocational Education particularly apprenticeships have been found to offer valuable pathways to employment and financial security for people with disability. Yet, people with disability remain significantly underrepresented in vocational education.

We have been working to improve access and benefit for young people with disability through:
  • Increasing access and collaboration including braiding and sequencing of apprenticeship supports in NCED initiatives; to date, we have supported over 1500 young people with high support needs into apprenticeships with a completion rate of just over 80%.
  • Australian Apprenticeship Disability Network (AADN): a collaborative network whose ambition is to transform the Australian Apprenticeship and Traineeship system into one that is inclusive and free from barriers for people with disability.
  • Increase the use of School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships, including for students in specialist education settings to support effective school to work transition.
  • Build capacity of key players to support young people with disability into employment, such as apprenticeship services, employment programs, training organisation, schools and families
  • Advocate for systems changes that remove barriers for young people with disability.
